Horizontal cutting can be used for cheese wheels, bread and buns. For cheese, an equatorial cut divides the wheel horizontally into an upper and a lower section.
High cheeses are often cut into two round half-round slices and then into segments, this allows to cut thicker slices than in the original height.

Soft cheeses such as Brie can be opened, separated, filled and reassembled before being cut into filled wedges.

In industrial bakeries, fresh or frozen bread can be cut lengthwise while leaving a hinge. The two halves remain connected, making the bread easier to fill at the point of sale.
